Translated by Daoxue Academy

6.5. Master Kong said, “As for Yan Hui, for three months his mind would not depart from humanity. The others could reach it on some days or in some months, but that is all.”

6.16. Master Kong said, “When substance exceeds refinement, one becomes a rustic. When refinement exceeds substance, one becomes a scribe. It is only when refinement and substance are properly blended that one becomes a noble person.”

6.17. Master Kong said, “Man is born with uprightness. The crooked man lives on by luck alone.”

6.18. Master Kong said, “One who knows it (the Way) is not as good as one who loves it, and one who loves it is not as good as one who delights in it.”

6.19. Master Kong said, “To those who are above average, one may talk of the higher things, but to those who are below average one may not do so.”

6.20. Fan Chi asked about wisdom. Master Kong said, “Devote yourself to the duties due to men, and respect spiritual beings while keeping them at a distance. This may be called wisdom.” He asked about humanity. The Master said, “The man of humanity puts the difficult first and the gain last. Such a man may be called virtuous.”

6.21. Master Kong said, “The man of wisdom delights in water; the man of humanity delights in mountains. The man of wisdom is active; the man of humanity is tranquil. The man of wisdom is happy; the man of humanity is long-lived.”

6.23. Master Kong said, “A cornered vessel that is not cornered—how could it be a cornered vessel? How could it?”

6.25. Master Kong said, “The noble person studies literature extensively and restrains himself with the rules of propriety, and thus he may keep from turning away from the Way.”

6.26. Master Kong visited Lady Nanzi, and Zilu was not pleased. The Master swore an oath to him, saying, “If I have done anything improper, may Heaven forsake me! May Heaven forsake me!”

6.28. Zigong said, “If there were one who extensively conferred benefit on the people and could bring salvation to the multitude, what would you say of him? Could he be called a man of humanity?” The Master said, “Why would this stop at humanity? Surely he must be a sage! Even Yao and Shun would fall short of this. The man of humanity, wishing to be established himself, also establishes others, and wishing to be prominent himself, also makes others prominent. To be able to draw a likeness from what is near at hand may be called the method of humanity.”
