Translated by Daoxue Academy

5.11. Zigong said, “What I do not want others to do to me, I also do not want to do to others.” The Master said, “Oh Zi! This is beyond your reach.”

5.12. Zigong said, “We can hear our Master’s cultural accomplishments, but we cannot hear his discourse on human nature and the Way of Heaven.”

5.25. Yan Hui and Zilu were in attendance. Master Kong said, “Why not each of you tell your wish?” Zilu said, “I should like to share my carriages and horses and light furs with friends, and wear them out together without regret.” Yan Hui said, “I should like never to boast of my good qualities, nor to make a display of my meritorious deeds.” Zilu said, “I should like to hear your wish.” The Master said, “To comfort the old, to be faithful to friends, and to cherish the young.”

5.27. Master Kong said, “In any village of ten households, there are sure to be those who are as loyal and trustworthy as myself, but none who love learning as much as I do.”
